대역

일감이 끊긴 배우 A는 낯선 남자의 사라진 아내 행세를 석 달 동안 해 달라는 제안을 받는다. 돈은 도저히 거절하기 힘들 만큼 크다. 하지만 조건은 그보다 훨씬 끔찍하다. 그 아내는 떠난 것이 아니었고, A의 마지막 기회처럼 보였던 이 연기는 살인을 감추기 위한 덮개였다.

A는 배우다.

한번 배역을 맡으면 자기 자신을 지워 버릴 만큼 그 사람처럼 변하는 것이 A의 재능이다.

하지만 이제 일은 끊겼고, 주연 자리도 더 젊은 배우에게 빼앗겼다.

집세를 내지 못해 곧 쫓겨날 처지다.

어느 오디션에서 또 떨어진 날, B라는 남자가 A에게 다가온다.

그는 A가 배역 속으로 완전히 사라지는 모습을 보았다고 말한다.

그리고 어떤 기획사에도 알릴 수 없는 일을 제안한다.

B의 아내 C가 ‘잠시 떠났다’는 것이다.

죽음을 앞둔 C의 어머니가 그 사실을 알면 안 되고, C가 처리하던 일들도 멈춰서는 안 된다.

그래서 B는 C가 앞으로 석 달 동안 계속 살아 있는 것처럼 보여야 한다고 말한다.

A가 C가 되어 달라는 뜻이다.

보수는 일주일마다 1년 치 집세에 가까운 돈이다.

A는 처음에는 거절한다.

그러나 빚을 하나하나 세어 본 뒤 결국 받아들인다.

B는 C의 집과 옷, 오래된 가족 영상 속 목소리를 A에게 넘긴다.

A는 지금까지 어떤 배역보다 더 치열하게 C를 익힌다.

문제는 이곳에는 카메라도 없고, 연기를 멈추게 해 줄 사람도 없다는 점이다.

A는 아침 식탁에서도, 욕실에서도, 잠결에서도 C처럼 굴어야 한다.

C의 어머니도 속이고, C의 친구들도 속인다.

하지만 아홉 살인 C의 딸 D만은 속지 않는다.

D는 아무 말도 하지 않은 채 A를 지켜본다.

B는 A의 말투와 몸짓을 하나하나 지시한다.

C와 같으면 상을 주고, 조금이라도 다르게 굴면 벌을 준다.

A는 집 안 곳곳에서 C의 흔적을 발견한다.

모든 것이 돌아올 생각으로 잠시 멈춰 둔 것처럼 남아 있다.

그러다 A는 가져가지 못한 여행 가방, 환풍구 안에 숨겨진 휴대전화, 말이 끊긴 채 끝난 음성 녹음을 찾아낸다.

C는 떠난 것이 아니었다.

누군가가 C를 사라지게 만든 것이다.

A는 대체 인물이 아니었다.

범죄를 가리기 위한 가림막이었다.

그때 모든 것이 뒤집힌다.

A가 평생 가장 잘할 수 있었던 연기는 살아 있던 여자를 지워 버리는 일이었고, A의 재능은 B에게 무기가 되어 있었다.

A가 C를 완벽하게 연기할수록 진짜 C는 더 깊이 묻힌다.

B는 A가 달라지고 있음을 눈치챈다.

석 달은 어느 한 날짜를 향해 빠르게 줄어든다.

C의 어머니가 서명해야 하는 날, 재산이 정리되는 날, 모든 침묵이 C가 그날 살아 있는 것처럼 보이는 데 달린 날이다.

A는 살아남기 위해 계속 C를 연기한다.

동시에 C인 척하며 증거를 모은다.

C의 녹음, C의 글씨, 그리고 D가 조용히 내어 준 믿음.

D는 첫날부터 A가 엄마가 아니라는 것을 알고 있었다.

그리고 A를 선택한다.

마지막 시험의 날, A는 자신이 가진 유일한 기술을 쓴다.

A는 한 번도 촬영장이 아니었던 그 집을 걸어 나온다.

그러나 완전히 내려놓을 수 없는 죽은 여자의 흔적을 안고 나온다.

A는 달라진 채 다시 일터로 돌아간다.

이제 A는 진실을 말하지 않는 배역이라면 누구 속으로도 다시 사라지지 않을 것이다.

The Understudy

A fading actor takes the role of her life: impersonating a stranger's vanished wife for ninety days. The pay is impossible. The catch is worse. The wife did not leave, and the performance meant to save the actor's career is hiding a murder.

The pay is a year's rent a week.

A refuses.

Then she counts her debts and says yes.

B gives her C's house, C's clothes, C's voice on old home videos.

A studies harder than for any role.

But there is no camera here, and no one calls cut.

She performs at breakfast, in the shower, in her sleep.

She fools C's mother.

She fools C's friends.

She cannot fool C's daughter, D, who is nine, who says nothing, who watches.

B directs every gesture.

He rewards continuity.

He punishes invention.

A finds C everywhere in the house, half-finished, as if she meant to come back.

Then A finds the rest: a packed bag never taken, a phone hidden in a vent, a voice memo cut off mid-word.

C did not leave.

C was disappeared.

A is not a substitute.

A is the cover.

That is the turn.

The role of her life is the erasure of a living woman, and A's craft is the weapon.

The better she plays C, the deeper C stays buried.

B senses her changing.

The ninety days shrink toward one date: the mother's signature, the estate, the silence, all of it resting on the wife being alive that day.

A keeps performing to stay alive.

In character, she gathers proof: C's recording, C's handwriting, the daughter's quiet trust.

D knew from the first day.

D chooses her.

For the last test, A uses the only craft she has, not to vanish but to reveal.

At the gathering where C must appear one final time, in front of the family, in front of B, A becomes C completely, then breaks the performance on her own terms and turns the room.

The confession lands on record.

B is taken.

D is safe.

A walks out of a house that was never a set.

She carries a dead woman she can never fully set down.

She goes back to the work changed.

She will disappear into no one again unless the part tells the truth.
