건져 올린 것

나는 20년 동안 사라진 침몰선 하나만을 쫓아 바다에 들어갔다. 마침내 그 배를 찾아낸 날, 내 앞을 가로막은 것은 평생 나를 믿어 준 죽어 가는 사람이었다.

나는 침몰선에 실린 화물을 찾아 잠수해 왔다.

하지만 오랫동안 내 손에 잡힌 것은 없었다.

B는 자기 배와 돈을 내주며 몇 해나 나를 믿어 줬고, 이제는 병든 몸으로 마지막 한철을 나와 함께 보내고 있었다.

그러던 어느 날, 나는 암초 근처에서 그토록 찾아 헤매던 난파선을 발견한다.

오래된 적하 목록은 맞았다.

그 안에는 정말 금고 상자들이 있었다.

B는 이 발견을 정식으로 신고하고, 깨끗하게 나눈 뒤, 자기 이름에 흠 하나 남기지 않고 일을 끝내고 싶어 한다.

하지만 더 좋은 장비를 가진 경쟁자 C가 이미 우리 좌표 근처를 맴돌고 있다.

그래서 나는 거짓말을 한다.

B에게는 아무것도 없었다고 말한다.

그리고 밤에 몰래 표식 부표를 옮긴 뒤 혼자 다시 잠수해, 누가 권리를 주장하기 전에 첫 번째 상자를 끌어올린다.

그 거짓말 덕분에 나는 시간을 벌고, 평생 기다려 온 기회를 먼저 붙잡는다.

하지만 B는 내 산소통에 묻은 흙탕 자국을 보고 모든 것을 알아차린다.

나는 사라진 부표 일을 C의 탓으로 돌리고, 결국 난파선의 권리를 차지한다.

발견 보상금도, 기록에 남을 이름도, 내 인생이 헛되지 않았다는 증거도 모두 내 것이 된다.

그러나 뒤집히는 순간이 온다.

돈은 좀처럼 들어오지 않고, B는 내가 어떤 사람이 되었는지 똑똑히 안 채 세상을 떠난다.

나는 마침내 내 것이 된 배 위에 선다.

평생 원하던 성과를 손에 넣었지만 곁에는 아무도 없다.

그제야 나는 깨닫는다.

나는 평생 도둑들을 쫓아다녔다.

그리고 이기기 위해, 내가 도둑이 되었다.

Salvage

I spent twenty years diving for one lost wreck. The day I finally find it, the only thing between me and the score is the dying man who believed in me.

I dive for sunken cargo.

I have found nothing that mattered.

B fronted me for years — his boat, his money, his faith — and now he is sick, working one last season at my side.

I find the wreck off the rocks.

The old manifest holds: the strongboxes are real.

B wants to log it clean, split it honest, go out with his name intact.

But C, a rival with better gear, is already circling our coordinates.

So I lie.

I tell B the site came up empty.

I move the marker buoys at night and dive the wreck alone, pulling the first box before anyone can claim it.

The lie buys me time and the lead of my life.

It also costs me B when he reads the silt on my tanks and understands.

I let C take the blame for the missing markers, and I win the wreck — the finder's fee, the name in the journals, the proof my whole life was not wasted.

Then the reversal: the money is slow, and B dies before it clears, knowing exactly what I became.

I stand on the deck I finally own, alone with the score I always wanted, and I see it.

I spent my life hunting thieves.

I became one to win.
