돈에 쪼들리던 동물 훈련사 A는 부잣집에서 위험한 개를 길들여 안전하다는 확인서를 써 달라는 거액의 일을 맡는다. 그런데 그 개는 한 남자를 죽이고 사고처럼 보이게 하도록 훈련되고 있었고, A의 확인서는 그들이 빠져나갈 구실이 될 상황이다. 개와 표적이 된 남자를 살리려면, 가족이 개를 풀어놓기 전에 돈을 주는 사람들보다 먼저 개를 바꿔 놓아야 한다.

A는 적은 돈을 받고 개를 훈련시키며 살아간다.

주인의 말보다 개의 몸짓과 반응을 먼저 읽고, 그 동물이 어떤 일을 당했는지 금세 알아차리는 사람이다.

빚에 몰린 A는 B의 담장 높은 저택에서 들어온 개인 의뢰를 받아들인다.

가족 행사가 열리기 전까지 사나운 구조견 D를 길들여 안전하다고 확인해 주는 일이다.

D는 누구에게나 달려들지만, 이상하게도 A 앞에서는 조금씩 진정한다.

A는 곧 D가 전에 끔찍한 방식으로 훈련받았다는 사실을 알아낸다.

B의 서재에 몰래 보관된 어떤 냄새에만 반응해 공격하도록 만들어진 것이다.

돈이 절실했던 A는 비밀 유지 서약서에 서명하고 저택에 남는다.

하지만 곧 진짜 목적을 깨닫는다.

B는 D를 얌전하게 만들려는 게 아니었다.

B와 사이가 틀어진 공동 상속자 C의 냄새에 D를 맞춰 두고, 나중에 C가 개에게 물려 죽으면 사고로 꾸미려는 계획이었다.

A가 써 주는 안전 확인서는 그 일을 덮는 데 쓰일 예정이었다.

그냥 떠나면 D는 죽임을 당하고, A도 책임에서 벗어나기 어렵다.

그래서 A는 의뢰를 맡은 척하면서 안에서부터 D를 다시 훈련시킨다.

죽이라는 신호가 들어와도 흥분하지 않고 차분해지도록 반응을 바꿔 나간다.

행사는 다가오고, B는 A의 태도를 의심하기 시작한다.

결국 B는 일정을 앞당긴다.

가족 행사 날, 많은 손님들 앞에서 B는 C를 향해 D가 달려들도록 신호를 보낸다.

그 순간 A가 D를 불러 세운다.

D는 C를 공격하지 않고 A 곁으로 와 붙는다.

방 안 가득한 사람들 앞에서, D가 일부러 무기로 길러졌다는 사실이 드러난다.

사고로 꾸미려던 계획은 무너지고, C는 목숨을 건진다.

B는 정체가 폭로된다.

A는 D를 데려가고, 더는 남의 잔인함에 안전하다는 도장을 찍어 주지 않는다.

대신 무기로 길러진 동물들을 다시 훈련시키고, 그들이 어떤 일을 당했는지 증언하는 일을 시작한다.

Call Him Off

A broke animal trainer takes a rich family's high-paying job: tame their dangerous dog and certify it safe. He finds the dog is being trained to kill one man and stage it as an accident, with his signature as the alibi. To save the dog and the target, he has to outtrain the people paying him before the family sets it loose.

A trains dogs for low pay and reads what was done to an animal faster than what an owner says.

Debt forces A to take a private contract at B's gated estate: tame an aggressive rescue dog, D, and certify it safe before a family gala.

D lunges at everyone but settles for A.

A notices D was trained before, cruelly, to attack one hidden scent kept locked in B's study.

A wants the money.

A signs the NDA and stays.

Then A understands the job.

D is not being made safe.

D is being keyed to the scent of C, B's estranged co-heir, so a future 'accident' erases C and clears the inheritance.

A's certification is the cover story.

Walking away means D is put down and A still carries the blame.

So A works against the contract from inside, counter-conditioning D to turn the kill cue into a calm cue, racing the gala while B watches for cracks.

B grows suspicious and moves the date up.

At the gala B triggers the attack on C in front of the guests.

A calls D off.

D heels to A instead of the kill, proof in a full room that the dog was built as a weapon.

The staged accident collapses.

C is protected.

B is exposed.

A keeps D, stops certifying other people's cruelty, and starts retraining weaponized animals and testifying to what was done to them.
