Clean Hands
I get paid to break into systems and make them safe. On a city water job I find a hidden backdoor written in a hand that looks like my own. I delete it instead of reporting it. One quiet lie pulls me back toward the dark I swore I left, until the hole I hid breaks the grid and the trail leads home to me.
Movement one: I am the firm's cleanest contractor.
No marks on my record.
C, the utility's security lead, vouches for me to the board and hands me the city water grid to harden.
I test it the right way.
Then I find a backdoor written in a hand that looks like mine.
Maybe I built it years ago.
Maybe someone copied my style to bury me.
I cannot prove it is not mine without tearing my own record open.
So I delete it and report nothing.
That is the first fall.
I hide instead of disclose.
Movement two: B finds me.
B watched that door and saw who closed it.
B asks for small things.
Leave a port open.
Lose a log.
I call each favor the last one.
Each favor needs the next to stay buried, and the clean man I was keeps shrinking.
Reversal: the hole I never reported is the one that breaks.
The grid fails.
A district's tap water turns unsafe.
The audit pulls the logs I doctored, and every patch I made to save myself now points back at me.
I built the trail to my own door.
Movement three: confess everything, or run and let C take the fall I shaped.
I choose.
The choice is the man I became.
The white hat is the breach.
