기록

법대로만 판결하기로 이름난 판사 A는, 유죄라고 확신한 남자를 처벌하기 위해 딱 한 번 법을 어긴다. 그러나 그는 무죄였다. 이제 A는 자신의 잘못을 드러내는 그 판결 하나를 덮기 위해, 그동안 지켜 온 모든 것을 스스로 더럽혀야 한다.

A는 주에서 가장 흠 없는 판사로 통한다.

상급심에서 판결이 뒤집힌 적도 없고, 어떤 권력자의 압력도 받아들이지 않았다.

그녀는 법이 허락하는 범위보다 자신이 보는 정의가 더 정확하다고 믿는다.

그러던 어느 날 잔혹한 사건 하나가 그녀의 재판부에 배당된다.

결정적인 증거가 있었지만, 문제는 그 증거가 절차상 흠이 있는 영장으로 확보됐다는 점이다.

법대로라면 증거에서 배제해야 한다.

그렇게 되면 B는 풀려난다.

하지만 A는 B가 범인이라고 확신한다.

그래서 조용히 선을 넘는다.

배석실에서 한마디를 흘리고, 판결문 문구를 살짝 비틀어, 결국 그 증거를 법정에 남긴다.

B는 유죄를 선고받는다.

A는 자신이 법조문이 아니라 정의를 따른 것이라고 스스로를 설득한다.

그러나 곧 항소심에서 판결이 뒤집힌다.

다른 사람의 자백이 나오고, 그 영장이 문제였던 이유도 드러난다.

증거는 처음부터 조작된 것이었고, B는 범인이 아니었다.

A의 확신은 죄 없는 사람을 감옥에 보냈고, 동시에 자신이 옳다는 믿음만 지켜 냈다.

서기 C는 이미 재판부 안에서 벌어진 일과 공식 기록 사이의 빈틈을 알아차렸다.

아직은 입을 다물고 있을 뿐이다.

이제 A는 첫 번째 잘못을 덮기 위해 두 번째 잘못을 저지르고, 다시 세 번째 잘못으로 이어진다.

신청 기록을 봉인하고, C를 압박하고, 평생 쌓아 온 명예를 필요한 침묵과 맞바꾼다.

한때 그녀의 결백을 증명하던 모든 판결이 이제는 그녀를 더 깊은 죄로 밀어 넣는다.

압박은 갈수록 단순하고 숨 막히게 변한다.

물러나려면 왜 물러나는지 고백해야 하고, 자리를 지키려면 더 많이 망가져야 한다.

법을 지키던 법대는 어느새 A가 법을 부수는 장소가 된다.

The Record

A judge famous for never bending the law bends it once, to convict a man she is certain is guilty. He was innocent. Now she must corrupt everything clean about herself to keep buried the one ruling that proved her wrong.

A presides over the cleanest bench in the state.

She has never been reversed.

She turns away every office that calls to pressure her.

She believes she sees justice more clearly than the law lets her act on it.

A violent case lands on her docket.

The key evidence was seized on a flawed warrant.

The law says she must exclude it.

Exclude it and B walks.

A is certain B is guilty.

So she takes a quieter path.

A word shaded in chambers, a ruling bent just enough, and the evidence stays.

B is convicted.

A tells herself she served justice, not the rule.

Then the reversal lands.

A second confession surfaces.

The warrant was flawed because the evidence was planted, and B did not do it.

Her certainty convicted an innocent man and protected her image of herself.

C, her clerk, has already seen the gap between the room and the record.

C says nothing yet.

Now A must bury the first compromise under a second, then a third.

She seals a motion.

She leans on C.

She trades the name she built for the silence she needs.

Every ruling that once made her clean now makes her dirty.
