손속임

거리 마술사 A의 손은 무엇이든 사라지게 만든다. 사람들을 붙잡아 두려고 그는 진짜 물건까지 사라지게 하기 시작한다. 묘기가 커질수록, 그는 더 망가져 간다.

A는 도심 광장에서 사람들 바로 앞에 서서 손기술 마술을 한다.

낯선 사람에게 시계나 반지를 빌려 눈앞에서 감쪽같이 사라지게 한 뒤, 박수가 터질 때 다시 돌려주는 것이 그의 대표 묘기다.

재능은 있지만 돈은 없고, 사람들은 그를 제대로 봐 주지 않는다.

소년 C는 날마다 A의 공연을 지켜보며 손놀림을 따라 한다.

그러던 어느 날 B가 근처에 자리를 잡고 더 요란한 공연을 벌이자, A의 관객들이 그쪽으로 몰려간다.

다급해진 A는 생방송에서 관객의 시계를 몰래 빼낸 뒤, 마치 마술처럼 다시 손목에 나타난 척한다.

영상은 순식간에 퍼진다.

사람들이 열광한 이유는 그게 단순한 속임수가 아니라 진짜 도둑질이라는 것을 어렴풋이 느꼈기 때문이다.

팁은 늘고, A는 점점 더 대담해진다.

지갑을 빼내고 대부분은 돌려주지만, 조금씩 자기 몫을 남긴다.

어느새 돌려주는 마술보다 훔쳐 갖는 일이 더 중요해진다.

이름이 알려지고 돈이 쌓일수록, A 안의 무언가는 조금씩 무너진다.

전환점은 A가 지갑 하나를 통째로 챙긴 뒤에 찾아온다.

그 지갑이 C를 돌보는 사람의 것임을 알게 되고, 동시에 C가 자신과 똑같은 방식으로 낯선 사람들의 동전을 손바닥 안에 숨기는 모습을 본다.

제자가 곧 스승이 어떤 사람이 되었는지를 보여 주는 증거가 된 것이다.

이제 A의 추락은 우연이 아니라 선택이다.

모든 것을 고백하고 돌려준 뒤, 처음으로 통했던 유일한 공연을 잃을 것인가.

아니면 계속 훔치며 이 거리에서 또 다른 자신을 만들어 낼 것인가.

A는 결국 공연을 택한다.

사람들이 무엇이 없어졌는지 세기 전에, 그는 가장 오래된 마술을 자기 자신에게 건다.

광장에서 사라지고, C에게 둘 모두를 망칠 손기술만 남긴다.

물건을 사라지게 하던 남자는 끝내 자기 양심마저 사라지게 한다.

이야기는 A의 눈으로, 무엇보다 그의 손을 먼저 보며 따라간다.

Sleight

A street magician's hands can make anything vanish. To keep his crowd, he starts making real things vanish. The better the trick, the worse the man.

A works a downtown plaza with close-up sleight of hand.

His signature: borrow a stranger's watch or ring, make it vanish, bring it back to applause.

He is gifted, broke, overlooked.

A boy, C, watches every day and copies his moves.

Then B sets up nearby with louder spectacle and pulls A's crowd.

Desperate, A livestreams a trick where he secretly lifts a spectator's watch, then 'reveals' it back on their wrist.

The clip goes viral because the theft is real and the crowd can feel it.

Tips swell.

A escalates: he lifts wallets, returns most, keeps a little.

Keeping becomes the point.

Each rise in fame and cash is paid for with a smaller fall in him.

The reversal comes when A lifts a wallet and pockets it whole, then sees it belonged to C's guardian, and sees C already palming coins from strangers the same way he does.

The student is proof of what the teacher has become.

His fall is now a choice, not an accident: confess and return everything and lose the only act that ever worked, or keep going and let the corner produce more of him.

He chooses the act.

He performs his oldest trick on himself, vanishing from the plaza before anyone counts what is missing, leaving C the method that will ruin them both.

The man who made things disappear disappears his own honesty.

We see it all through A's eyes, hands first.
