Cause of Death

A coroner has never signed a lie. Then the body on her table can clear her own son. She makes the first small cut against the truth, and cannot stop.

A runs the morgue in a small county.

Her signature means the truth.

She tells grieving families exactly what the body says, never softer.

That honesty is the one thing she is proud of.

A girl comes in dead, the daughter of B, the man who funds half the county.

The evidence puts A's son C at the scene that night.

B wants it ruled an accident.

The same ruling clears C.

A tells herself she is protecting her child.

She omits one bruise.

Then she rounds a toxicology number.

Each cut she does not make is her own hand.

The ruling holds.

Then the reversal: the evidence she buried did not clear C at all.

It hid that B killed his own daughter, and A's false certificate lets B walk.

Worse, B uses A's clean ruling to pin a second death on an innocent man, and brings that body to her table next.

The dead A swore to speak for now lie because she lied.

To free the innocent she must confess the first forgery and send C to prison.

She holds the pen over the second certificate.

She built a whole life saying the dead cannot be silenced.

Her own signature proves they can.
