그 말 그대로

법정에서 두 언어를 모두 알아듣는 사람은 통역사 A뿐이다. A는 낯선 피고인을 풀어 주려고 단어 하나를 바꾼다. 그 말을 감추려고 다음 말도 바꾸고, 결국 A를 믿게 만들었던 정확함이 A를 무너뜨리는 증거가 된다.

A는 법정 통역사다.

한마디도 보태지 않고, 한마디도 빼지 않는 사람으로 알려져 있다.

법정 안에서 두 언어를 모두 아는 사람은 A뿐이라 사람들은 A의 말을 기계처럼 믿는다.

그 믿음이 A가 가진 전부다.

어느 날 피고인 B의 재판에서 B는 재판부가 알아듣지 못하는 말로 대답한다.

심문을 받던 B는 자기도 모르게 유죄로 몰릴 말을 내뱉고, A는 그 말을 조금 누그러뜨려 옮긴다.

판사는 죄가 아니라 의심을 듣고, B는 풀려난다.

A는 스스로에게 거짓말이 아니라 자비였다고 말한다.

하지만 A는 그때 알게 된다.

이 법정에서 사람들이 무엇을 듣게 할지는 오직 자신이 정한다는 것을.

얼마 뒤 A는 돈을 받고 또 말을 바꾼다.

처음에는 아주 작은 뜻의 차이였다.

곧 문장 하나가 달라지고, 진술의 흐름까지 바뀐다.

그때 B가 다시 나타난다.

B는 A가 한 일을 알고 있다.

B는 A에게 자기 편이 되라고 요구하고, 말을 듣지 않으면 폭로하겠다고 협박한다.

A는 첫 거짓말을 묻기 위해 계속 거짓말을 한다.

그러던 중 A보다 그 언어에 훨씬 밝은 젊은 통역사 C가 같은 사건에 투입된다.

C는 A가 영어로 옮긴 말과 증인의 원래 말이 어긋난다는 것을 알아차린다.

몰린 A는 끝내 가장 나쁜 선택을 한다.

겁에 질린 증인의 말을 비틀어 자신을 지키고, 그 바람에 죄 없는 사람이 기소된다.

C는 녹음 파일을 찾아낸다.

원래 언어로 다시 틀어 본 법정에서, A가 늘 자랑하던 정확함이 그대로 A를 고발한다.

바꾼 말 하나하나가 지문처럼 남아 있다.

한때 A를 기계처럼 믿었던 법정은 이제 두 언어로 A의 말을 되짚는다.

A는 통역사에게 가장 필요하지만 한번 잃으면 되찾을 수 없는 것을 잃는다.

믿음이다.

A court interpreter is the only person in the room who hears both truths. She bends one word to free a stranger. To hide that word, she must bend the next, until the precision that made her trusted becomes the proof that destroys her.

No one else in the room speaks both languages, so the room trusts her like a machine.

At one hearing B is on trial.

B speaks only her second language.

Under questioning B lets slip a phrase that would convict him.

A softens it.

The judge hears doubt where there was guilt.

B walks free.

A tells herself she gave mercy, not a lie.

But she felt the power.

She alone decides what the room hears.

She bends words again, this time for a man who pays.

Small changes.

A comma of meaning.

Then a clause.

Then B comes back.

B knows what she did.

B wants her loyalty and threatens to name her.

To bury the first lie she keeps lying.

Meanwhile C, a younger interpreter sharper in the language than A has ever been, is brought onto a shared case.

C hears a seam where A's English does not match the witness.

Cornered, A makes her worst choice.

She twists a frightened witness to shield herself, and an innocent person is charged.

C pulls the audio.

Played back in the original tongue, A's own exactness damns her.

Every altered word is a fingerprint.

The room that trusted her like a machine now re-speaks her, both languages at once.

A is left without the only thing an interpreter cannot work without and can never earn back.
