마지막 기댈 곳

다른 상담사들이 포기한 사람들은 결국 A에게 온다. 추문에서 살아남아야 하는 A는 회복 중인 내담자를 일부러 붙잡아 둔다. 누군가에게 꼭 필요한 사람이고 싶다는 마음이, 정작 A 자신은 치료하지 못하는 상처가 된다.

A는 상담 현장에서 마지막으로 찾아가는 사람이다.

다른 상담사들이 더는 감당하지 못한 내담자를 보내면, A는 어떻게든 그 사람을 일으켜 세운다.

아무도 못 고친 사람을 자신만은 고칠 수 있다는 믿음이 A의 자존심이자 삶의 버팀목이다.

그런데 A가 너무 일찍 종결시킨 예전 내담자 C가 재발 끝에 죽고, C를 의뢰했던 기관은 A의 치료 과정을 조사하기 시작한다.

처음으로 A의 명성에 금이 간다.

그때 B가 온다.

B는 A가 맡았던 누구보다 빠르게 좋아지고, 곧 상담을 끝낼 수 있을 만큼 회복된다.

하지만 A에게는 바로 지금 성공 사례가 필요하다.

그래서 A는 B의 회복을 늦추기 시작한다.

괜찮아진 날들을 회피라고 해석하고, 혼자 설 수 있게 해 줄 방법들은 알려 주지 않는다.

대신 B가 다시 찾아오게 만드는 불안을 키운다.

B는 점점 더 A에게 의지하고, 더 고마워하고, 더 깊이 묶인다.

C에 대한 조사가 가까워지는 동안, A는 매 상담마다 B가 눈치채지 못하게 B를 아픈 사람으로 붙잡아 두어야 한다.

그러던 어느 날 B는 선물을 가져와 A에게 말한다.

자신을 진짜로 이해해 준 사람은 A뿐이었다고.

그 순간 A는 처음으로 자신을 똑바로 본다.

자신은 B를 낫게 하는 것이 아니라 B에게 기대어 버티고 있었다.

하지만 알아차렸다고 해서 멈추지는 못한다.

A에게는 B가 필요한 마음이, B가 A를 필요로 하는 마음보다 훨씬 크기 때문이다.

B가 마침내 떠나려 하자 A는 위험 소견을 꾸며 내 B를 계속 치료 안에 묶어 둔다.

그 거짓말은 한 번의 상담을 더 버티게 해 주지만 곧 무너진다.

B는 진짜 기록을 찾아낸다.

A는 면허를 잃고, B를 잃고, 자신을 지탱하던 유일한 이름마저 잃는다.

누구든 고칠 수 있다고 믿었던 치료자.

그러나 자신을 치료자로 만들었던 그 굶주림만은 끝내 고치지 못한 사람.

Last Resort

A therapist is the one other therapists call when they give up. To survive a scandal, she keeps a recovering client sick. Her need to be needed becomes the wound she cannot treat.

A is the field's last resort.

When other clinicians quit a case, they send it to her, and she saves it.

Her whole worth rests on being the one who fixes people no one else can.

A former client, C, relapses and dies after A discharged him early.

The referring clinic opens a review.

A's reputation cracks for the first time.

Into this comes B, a client improving faster than anyone A has treated.

B is almost ready to leave.

A cannot afford to lose a success right when she needs one to stay.

So A slows B down.

She reframes B's good days as denial.

She withholds the tools that would set B free, and feeds the fear that keeps B coming back.

B grows more dependent, more grateful, more hers.

Each session A must keep B sick without B noticing, while the review into C closes in.

Reversal: B brings A a gift and says A is the only person who ever truly understood.

A sees herself clearly for the first time.

She is not curing B.

She is feeding on B.

But seeing it does not stop her, because she needs it more than B does.

When B finally moves to leave, A fabricates a risk note to hold B in her care.

The lie protects her for one session, then unravels.

B finds the real file.

A loses her license, loses B, and loses the only identity that held her together: the healer who could not heal the hunger that made her one.
