기계공학자 A는 오래 바라던 승진을 놓치지 않으려고, 문제가 있다는 걸 알면서도 부품에 합격 도장을 찍는다. 결국 기계는 사고를 일으키지만 그는 사실을 털어놓지 않는다. 진실을 묻은 대가로 더 높은 자리에 오르고, 그 기계는 오늘도 멈추지 않는다.

A는 새 산악 케이블카의 제동장치 설계를 맡고 있다.

개통만 무사히 끝나면 그는 몇 년 동안 바라던 수석 엔지니어 자리에 오를 수 있다.

개통을 사흘 앞두고 후배 B가 싼값에 들여온 볼트 한 묶음에서 머리카락만 한 균열을 찾아낸다.

부품을 새로 주문하면 개통일은 반드시 밀린다.

임원 C는 이미 비상 예산까지 다 써버린 뒤라 어떻게든 예정대로 테이프를 끊으려 한다.

A는 안전 여유가 있으니 버틸 거라고 스스로를 설득한다.

B is suspended, then gone.

Each step up costs A a piece of his nerve; he starts listening for the cable in every quiet room.

Investigators reopen the case.

A holds the one document that clears him and condemns B's memory.
