바통을 넘기는 법

나는 국가대표 400미터 계주팀의 마지막 주자다. 이제 팀에서 가장 빠른 선수도 아니다. 연맹은 내게 천재 신인을 맡겨 훈련시키라고 한다. 나는 내 자리를 지키려고 그에게 바통을 잘못 넘기는 법을 가르친다.

A는 국가대표 400미터 계주팀의 마지막 주자다.

전성기는 이미 지나갔고, 뒤에서 치고 올라오는 선수들이 점점 더 선명하게 보인다.

그때 연맹이 B를 데려온다.

B는 어리고 빠르다.

게다가 A를 보며 달리기를 시작했다고 말할 만큼 A를 우러러본다.

감독 C는 A에게 B의 바통 터치를 집중적으로 봐 주라고 한다.

B가 아직 제대로 못 하는 유일한 부분이 바로 그 지점이다.

A는 곧바로 계산이 선다.

B가 바통까지 잘 받게 되면 A의 자리는 끝이다.

그래서 A는 아주 티 나지 않는 잘못된 습관을 심어 준다.

손을 반 박자 늦게 뻗게 만드는, 겉으로는 긴장한 탓처럼 보이는 작은 오류다.

B는 경기마다 바통을 떨어뜨리고, 팀은 중요한 대회를 놓친다.

C는 B의 손이 문제라고 생각하고 A를 계속 마지막 주자로 세운다.

A는 자기 자리도 지키고, B의 존경도 잃지 않는다.

훈련 때마다 A는 그 실수를 고쳐 줄 수 있다.

하지만 매번 모른 척한다.

거짓말은 계속 먹이를 줘야 살아남기 때문이다.

모든 것이 뒤집히는 건 비가 내리는 결승전이다.

A의 다리는 이미 버티기 힘들고, 몸은 무심코 자신이 B에게 수백 번 새겨 넣은 리듬을 따라간다.

그런데 그 리듬은 처음부터 망가져 있었다.

A는 결승선 앞에서 바통을 떨어뜨린다.

전국에 생중계되는 화면 속에서, 그 실패는 불운이 아니다.

그가 남의 몸에 심어 둔 결함이 자기 몸을 타고 돌아온 결과다.

이후 B는 다른 팀으로 옮겨 완벽한 바통 터치로 우승한다.

A는 관중석에서 그 모습을 지켜보며, 저 손을 만든 사람이 누구였는지 깨닫는다.

The Handoff

I anchor the national relay, and I am no longer the fastest man on it. The federation hands me a prodigy to train. To keep my lane, I teach him the baton pass wrong.

A anchors the national 4x100 relay.

A is past his quickest year and feels the field closing.

The federation signs B, younger, faster, who treats A like the reason he started running.

C, the coach, tells A to drill B on the baton exchange, the one skill B still botches.

A does the math in his head.

A clean B is the end of A.

So A teaches the handoff with a flaw stitched in, a half-beat late reach that reads as nerves.

B's drops cost meets.

C blames B's hands and keeps A on the anchor leg.

A holds his spot and the kid's worship at the same time.

Every session A could correct it.

Every session A chooses the lie, because the lie has to be fed to live.

The reversal comes in a wet final.

A's legs are spent and his mind reaches for the rhythm he carved a hundred times into B, and it is the broken rhythm.

A drops the baton at the line, on national television, his fall not bad luck but the exact flaw he planted in another man returning through his own muscle.

After, B runs clean for a rival team and wins.

A watches from the stands and knows whose hands taught those hands.
