설탕 레이스

기울어 가는 빵집의 제빵사는 크림 장식 속에 글자를 숨긴다. 부유한 손님은 약혼녀가 케이크 한 조각을 먹고 눈물을 흘린 뒤부터 모든 행사에 그녀를 부른다. 그러던 어느 날 약혼녀가 크림이 묻은 손으로 제빵사의 손바닥에 한마디를 남긴다. 도와줘. 답을 전하려면 제빵사는 아무도 쉽게 빠져나오지 못하는 그 집으로 계속 들어가야 한다.

A는 손님이 끊긴 가게에서 케이크를 굽는다.

그녀가 남들보다 잘하는 일은 아주 가는 설탕 장식 안에 글자를 숨기는 것이다.

멀리서 보면 그저 섬세한 무늬일 뿐이라 아무도 읽지 못한다.

돈 많고 까다로운 B는 약혼녀 C가 A의 케이크를 맛보고 울음을 터뜨린 뒤, 집안의 모든 행사에 A를 부르기 시작한다.

약혼식 날, C는 크림이 묻은 쪽지를 A의 손바닥에 몰래 쥐여 준다.

거기 적힌 말은 단 하나, 도와줘.

A는 그 말을 외면하지 못해 계속 주문을 받는다.

그 집에 다시 들어가기 위해서다.

A는 크림 속 글자로 C에게 답을 보내고, 집에서 일하는 사람들을 살피며, 잠긴 방들과 C가 혼자 남겨지는 일이 절대 없다는 규칙을 알아낸다.

하지만 B가 숨겨 둔 글자를 발견하면서 모든 주문을 한꺼번에 끊어 버린다.

가게의 마지막 수입줄도 그렇게 끊긴다.

그래도 C는 이제 A를 믿고, B가 예전에도 다른 여자들에게 무슨 짓을 했는지 보여 주는 증거를 몰래 건넨다.

B는 가게를 협박하고, 이어 A의 가족까지 들먹인다.

A는 결국 웨딩 케이크를 만들겠다고 한다.

대신 그 케이크를 축배가 오르는 순간 천천히 무너지도록 만든다.

케이크 안에 묻어 두었던 말들은 무너지며 드러나고, 이제는 방 안의 사람들도 휴대폰 카메라도 모두 읽을 만큼 커진다.

사람들이 혼란에 빠진 사이, C는 처음으로 혼자 현관문을 열고 걸어 나간다.

A의 가게는 사라진다.

그녀는 더 작은 곳에서 다시 시작하고, 그 뒤로는 자신이 진심으로 만들고 싶은 것만 굽는다.

Sugar Lace

A failing baker hides words inside her frosting. A rich client books her for every party, until his fiancée smears one word into her palm. To answer, the baker must keep baking her way into a house that never lets anyone leave.

A bakes in a dying storefront.

Her one gift is words piped into sugar lace, too fine to read across a room.

B, rich and exact, books her for every event after C, his fiancée, tastes one cake and weeps.

At the engagement party C presses a frosting-smeared note into A's palm.

One word: help.

A keeps saying yes to the house, just to keep coming back.

She answers C in the icing, learns the staff, the locked rooms, the rule that C is never left alone.

Then B finds a hidden message and cancels every order at once.

The shop's last income dies with it.

But C trusts A now, and slips her proof of what B has done to women before her.

B threatens the shop, then A's family.

A agrees to make the wedding cake.

She builds it to fail on cue, a slow collapse timed to the toast, the buried words finally large enough for the room and the phones to read.

In the panic, C walks out the front door alone for the first time.

The shop is gone.

A opens something smaller, and from then on bakes only what she means.
