1번 피험자

돈 때문이 아니라 죽어 가는 엄마를 살리고 싶어서, A는 뇌 질환 치료제 임상시험에 들어간다. 그는 연구진이 바라던 가장 이상적인 피험자가 된다. 그리고 그 자리를 지키려고 거짓말을 시작한다.

A는 1년 동안 진행되는 뇌 질환 치료제 임상시험에 지원한다.

엄마는 병 때문에 딸의 얼굴마저 잊어 가고 있고, 이 약은 그 병의 진행을 멈출지도 모른다.

A는 그 치료법을 만드는 데 자신도 꼭 필요한 사람이 되고 싶다.

그는 늘 제시간에 오고, 상태도 안정적이며, 증상 기록에도 흠잡을 데가 없다.

책임 연구자 B는 그런 A를 연구의 간판처럼 앞세운다.

A는 난생처음 자신이 선택받았다고 느낀다.

시간이 지나자 약이 정말 효과가 있는 것처럼 보인다.

기억은 또렷해지고, 욕망은 더 선명해진다.

검사 수치도 계속 좋다.

A는 그 자리를 놓치고 싶지 않아 증상 기록을 조금씩 꾸미기 시작한다.

좋은 피험자, 특별한 사람으로 남기 위해서다.

그는 불안해하는 새 참가자 C에게 시험은 안전하다고 말하며 참여를 권한다.

C가 손떨림과 기억이 끊기는 증상을 호소하자, A는 조금만 더 버텨 보라고 달래고 몰래 C의 증상 기록까지 고친다.

결국 C는 병원 바닥에 쓰러진다.

그런데도 B는 시험을 멈추지 않는다.

오히려 A에게 돈을 조금 줄 테니 다른 참가자들을 안심시키고 계속 남아 있게 해 달라고 한다.

A는 그 제안을 받아들인다.

이후 눈가림이 해제되면서 진실이 드러난다.

A는 처음부터 대조군이었다.

약을 먹은 적이 없었다.

그가 느꼈던 또렷함은 약효가 아니라 특별한 사람이 되고 싶다는 자신의 집착이 만들어 낸 것이었다.

그가 실제로 남긴 것은 조작된 자료와 망가진 C의 몸뿐이다.

A는 B를 폭로하고 모든 것을 끝낼 수 있다.

하지만 그는 그 일을 계속한다.

참가자들을 안심시키고, 붙잡아 두고, 계속 거짓말을 한다.

이제 그 거짓말 속에서만 자신이 아직 선택받은 사람으로 남을 수 있기 때문이다.

엄마는 여전히 A의 얼굴을 알아보지 못한다.

A가 안심시키는 새 참가자마다 또 다른 C가 될 수 있고, A는 그 사실을 알고 있다.

Subject One

Her mother forgets her face to a disease this drug might halt.

A wants to matter to the cure.

She is the ideal subject.

Steady.

Her symptom logs are clean.

B, the lead researcher, makes her the face of the study.

A feels chosen for the first time in her life.

Movement two.

The drug seems to sharpen her — clearer memory, sharper hunger.

The numbers love her.

So A starts shading her logs to keep them clean, to stay the star.

She recruits C, a nervous newcomer, promising the trial is safe.

When C reports tremors and blackouts, A talks her into staying and quietly edits C's symptom sheet.

C collapses on the floor of the clinic.

B does not pause the trial.

He offers A a small paid role: keep the other subjects calm, keep them in.

A takes it.

Movement three.

Then the unblinding comes.

A was in the control group the whole time.

No drug.

The sharpness was only her own need to be the exceptional one.

The single real thing she produced was the falsified data — and C's broken body.

A could expose B and end it.

Instead she keeps the job, keeps the others calm, keeps lying, because the lie is the only place she is still chosen.

Her mother still does not know her face.

The ongoing pressure: each new subject A reassures is another C waiting to fall, and A knows it.
