찾아낸 대가

한 번도 흠잡힌 적 없는 사립탐정이 이름을 알릴 만한 의뢰를 맡는다. 그는 하루 만에 실종된 딸을 찾아낸다. 그런데 그 딸이 알고 있는 사실이 자기 보수보다 훨씬 값나간다는 걸 알게 되자, 그는 그 사실을 팔기 시작한다.

A는 혼자 일하는 사립탐정이다.

그에게는 딱 하나의 원칙이 있다.

의뢰인을 위해서라도 법은 어기지 않는다는 것.

그 원칙은 A의 자존심이자, 사람들이 그를 믿고 찾는 이유다.

어느 날 B가 사라진 딸 C를 찾아 달라며 A를 찾아온다.

보수는 A가 받아 본 것 중 가장 크다.

늘 뒤처리 같은 일만 맡아 온 A에게는 자기 이름을 세상에 알릴 기회이기도 하다.

A는 이틀 만에 C를 찾아낸다.

하지만 C는 길을 잃은 게 아니었다.

스스로 도망친 것이었다.

C는 B의 회사가 한 마을을 망가뜨릴 만큼 독을 퍼뜨렸다는 증거 자료를 가지고 있었다.

C는 제발 자신이 있는 곳을 말하지 말아 달라고 A에게 애원한다.

A는 하루 동안 주소를 숨긴다.

그는 스스로 C를 지키는 거라고 믿는다.

그러다 한 기자가 A가 알고 있는 사실에 돈을 주겠다고 한다.

A는 아주 작은 단서 하나를 판다.

이 정도는 괜찮다고 생각한다.

이 돈도 완전히 더러운 돈은 아니라고 스스로를 설득한다.

한편 B는 딸을 계속 찾아 달라며 A에게 돈을 더 준다.

A는 보수를 계속 받기 위해 거짓 단서를 흘린다.

거짓말 하나가 다음 거짓말을 낳는다.

그는 C가 가진 자료를 조금씩 쪼개 기자에게 팔고, B에게 팔고, 돈을 내는 사람에게 판다.

그러면서도 자신은 원칙을 지키는 사람이라고 우긴다.

결국 사건을 끝내고 마지막 보수를 받기 위해 A는 B에게 C의 주소를 넘긴다.

B의 사람들이 C에게 먼저 닿는다.

C를 구할 수 있었던 증거는 이미 A의 손을 거쳐 여기저기 팔려 흩어진 뒤다.

A는 보수를 받는다.

이름도 얻는다.

그러나 그는 자신이 늘 경멸하던 탐정이 되어 버렸고, 한때 자기 전부였던 원칙이 무엇이었는지도 더는 떠올리지 못한다.

Finder's Fee

A private detective with a spotless record takes the case that could make his name. He finds the missing girl in a day. Then he learns what she knows is worth more than his fee, and he starts selling it.

A works alone.

He has one rule.

He never breaks the law for a client.

The rule is his pride and his whole brand.

B hires him to find a missing daughter, C.

The fee is the biggest of A's life, the case that could lift him out of the background work he resents.

A finds C in two days.

C is not lost.

She ran.

She took files that prove B's company poisoned a town.

C begs A to stay quiet.

A withholds the address for one day.

He tells himself he is protecting her.

Then a reporter offers cash for what A knows.

A sells one small detail.

He calls it harmless.

He tells himself the money is clean enough.

B keeps paying A to search, so A plants a false trail to keep the fee coming.

One lie funds the next.

He starts selling C's files in pieces, to the reporter, to B, to whoever pays, still swearing he is the man with the rule.

To finally close the case and collect, A hands B the address.

B's people reach C first.

The evidence that could have saved her is already sold and scattered by A's own hand.

A gets his fee.

He gets his name.

He has become the detective he always despised, and he can no longer remember the rule that used to be his.
