젊은 사건 기자 A는 실종된 여자아이 사건을 보도하면서, 확인도 끝나기 전에 용의자의 이름을 먼저 공개한다. 그 특종으로 A는 단숨에 주목받지만, 무고한 남자의 삶은 무너진다. 나중에 그 제보를 누가 흘렸는지 알게 된 A는, 그를 구하려면 자신이 쌓아 올린 모든 것을 스스로 무너뜨려야 한다.

A는 작은 신문사에서 일하는 사건 기자다.

실력은 있지만 늘 뒤로 밀려 있었고, 언젠가 세상이 알아볼 만한 1면 기사를 쓰고 싶어 한다.

어느 날 한 여자아이가 실종되고, 사건은 온라인에서 크게 퍼진다.

그때 익명의 제보자가 A에게 조용한 이웃 B를 지목한다.

B에게는 허술한 알리바이밖에 없다.

A는 따로 확인할 만한 증언을 확보하지 못했지만, 더 기다리면 큰 언론사에 빼앗길 거라고 생각한다.

결국 A는 B의 이름을 기사에 싣는다.

A의 기사는 가장 먼저 나갔고, 세상은 그 기사에 달려든다.

방송국에서 연락이 오고, 편집장은 A를 앞세운다.

반대로 B의 집에는 낙서가 생기고, 직장에서도 쫓겨나고, 그의 얼굴은 악마 같은 사람으로 몰려 인터넷에 퍼진다.

그런데 사건의 시간대를 다시 살펴볼수록 맞지 않는 부분이 하나둘 드러난다.

A도 의심을 느끼지만, 지금 정정보도를 내면 진짜 범인을 잡는 데 도움이 되기는커녕 자기만 끝장날 거라고 스스로를 설득한다.

A는 오히려 후속 기사를 내서 자신이 품은 의문을 덮어 버린다.

얼마 뒤 실종됐던 아이는 살아서 발견된다.

진짜 납치범은 C였고, B를 향한 소란 속에서 C는 빠져나간다.

그때 모든 것이 뒤집힌다.

C가 A에게 연락해 자신이 바로 그 익명의 제보자였다고 밝힌다.

C는 오래전부터 원한이 있던 B를 무너뜨리려고 A에게 거짓 방향을 던졌고, 특종에 목마른 기자라면 이름을 확인 없이 실을 거라고 계산했다.

A는 자신도 모르는 사이 C의 도구가 된 것이다.

이제 A에게는 C를 잡을 수 있는 결정적인 단서가 있다.

하지만 그걸 쓰려면 자신이 확인되지 않은 이름을 보도했다는 사실, 그리고 자신의 성공이 한 사람의 삶을 망가뜨린 대가였다는 사실까지 모두 인정해야 한다.

A는 창가에 선 B를 바라보고, 화면 속에 떠 있는 자신의 얼굴을 바라본다.

그리고 진실을 밝히는 일이 자신이 그토록 되고 싶었던 모습을 포기할 만큼 가치 있는지 선택해야 한다.

A를 무너뜨리는 것은 누군가가 들려준 거짓말이 아니다.

A가 알고도 붙잡고 있던 거짓말이다.

She is good, overlooked, hungry for a front page that matters.

A missing girl goes viral.

An anonymous tipster points A at B, a quiet neighbor with a thin alibi.

A has no second source.

She runs the name anyway, certain she is right, certain waiting means losing it to the bigger outlets.

She is first.

The story explodes.

Cameras call her.

Her editor frames her work.

B's house is graffitied, his job gone, his face a meme for a monster.

Then small cracks appear in the timeline.

A feels the doubt and chooses the byline over the correction, telling herself a retraction now would help no predator and only end her.

She doubles down with a follow-up that buries her own questions.

The girl is found alive.

The real abductor is C, who walks free in the noise.

Reversal: C contacts A, amused, and reveals C was the tipster.

C fed A the story to bury B, an old enemy, knowing a reporter starved for a scoop would print a name without checking.

A was the weapon.

Now A holds the one thing that could convict C, but using it means confessing she ran an unverified name, that her rise was built on a man's ruin.

She watches B at his window, watches her own face on a screen, and must decide whether the truth is worth the only self she ever wanted to be.

Her fall is not the lie she was told.
