고정하중

한 건축가가 마침내 자기 이름을 걸 수 있는 건물을 설계한다. 하지만 그 탑이 안전 기준보다 심하게 흔들린다는 사실을 알게 되고, 설계를 바꾼 사람이 자신의 길을 열어 준 스승이라는 것도 알게 된다. 그는 입주가 시작되기 전에 자기 대표작을 위험 건물로 신고해야 한다. 아니면 자신의 이름으로 거짓을 덮어야 한다.

A는 오랫동안 안전하지만 눈에 띄지 않는 건물만 설계해 왔다.

그를 가르치고 회사까지 세운 B가 어느 날 A에게 평생 한 번 올까 말까 한 일을 맡긴다.

도시의 새 상징이 될, 가늘고 비틀린 형태의 고급 주거 타워 설계였다.

이제 A의 이름도 세상에 남을 수 있었다.

입주를 몇 주 앞둔 어느 날, 바닥판이 휘면서 작업자 한 명이 추락한다.

회사는 단순 사고로 덮으려 한다.

그러나 신입 구조기술자 C는 A에게 타워의 흔들림이 허용 범위를 넘는다고 말한다.

A는 회사의 공동 경영자 자리를 눈앞에 두고 있었다.

그는 도면에 확인 도장을 찍고 모른 척한다.

그래도 마음이 놓이지 않아 원래 계산서를 꺼내 본 A는 충격적인 사실을 발견한다.

자신이 안전하게 잡아 두었던 기둥들이, 승인 도장이 찍힌 뒤 더 가늘게 바뀌어 있었다.

그것도 자기 도장 아래에서였다.

A가 변경 과정을 추적한 끝에 드러난 사람은 B였다.

B는 수주를 따내려고 구조를 줄였고, A에게는 대담한 형태가 자기 재능에서 나온 것처럼 믿게 만들었다.

A의 대표작은 거짓 위에 세워져 있었고, 세상이 칭찬한 그의 천재성마저 B가 꾸민 것이었다.

그사이 입주민들은 열쇠를 받아 가기 시작한다.

B는 의리를 지키라고 애원하다가, 도면에는 A의 도장도 찍혀 있다며 협박한다.

타워를 고발하면 A도 함께 무너질 수밖에 없었다.

결국 A는 실제 하중 보고서를 시에 제출하고 입주민들을 대피시킨다.

그 일로 A의 일도, B의 자리도 끝난다.

타워는 보강재에 기대어 텅 빈 채 위험 건물로 남는다.

사람들은 살았다.

A는 이제 혼자 작은 사무실을 꾸려 간다.

그의 도장은 처음으로, 아니라고 말할 줄 아는 이름이 된다.

Dead Load

An architect finally designs the landmark that will carry his name. Then he learns the tower sways past safety — and the man who altered it is the mentor who made his career. He must condemn his own masterpiece before the residents move in, or let his name shelter the lie.

A spends years drawing safe, forgettable buildings.

B, the firm's founder and the man who trained him, hands A the commission of a lifetime: a slender twisting residential tower, the city's new icon.

A's name will finally mean something.

Weeks before move-in, a worker falls when a floor plate flexes.

The firm calls it an accident.

C, a junior structural engineer, tells A the tower sways past tolerance.

A wants the partnership.

He signs off and looks away.

To prove the tower is sound, A pulls the original calculations — and finds his conservative columns were thinned after his sign-off, under his own seal.

He traces the change.

The reversal: the hand is B's.

B slimmed the structure to win the bid, then let A believe the daring shape was his own genius.

A's masterpiece is a lie, and his celebrated brilliance was B's design.

Residents start taking keys.

B begs loyalty, then warns that A's seal is on the drawings too — expose the tower, and A falls with it.

A submits the true load report to the city and forces an evacuation, ending his career and his mentor's.

The tower stands empty, braced, condemned.

The residents are safe.

A keeps a small practice now, alone, under a seal that finally means refusal.
