마지막 서식지

방역 기사 A는 어떤 현장도 말끔히 처리하며 이름을 쌓아 간다. 그러다 한 건물에서 법으로 보호받는 박쥐 서식지를 발견한다. 승진을 놓치기 싫었던 그는 사실을 덮고, 그 거짓말은 결국 그를 속에서부터 무너뜨린다.

A는 회사에서 가장 믿음직한 방역 기사다.

남들이 꺼리는 현장도 마다하지 않는다.

건물 밑 좁은 공간, 하수구, 벽 속 빈틈까지 기어 들어가며 일을 끝낸다.

그는 자기 일에 자부심이 있다.

사람들이 방역 일을 얕잡아 본다고 느끼기 때문에 더 철저하게 일한다.

A가 바라는 것은 팀장 자리와 그에 걸맞은 인정이다.

회사 대표 B는 오래 멈춰 있던 상업용 건물 계약을 마무리하면 승진을 생각해 보겠다고 말한다.

A는 그 건물을 점검하다가 지붕 안쪽 빈 공간에 보호종 박쥐들이 모여 사는 것을 발견한다.

원칙대로라면 즉시 작업을 멈추고 신고한 뒤, 비용이 많이 드는 이주 절차를 밟아야 한다.

그렇게 되면 계약도 승진도 물 건너간다.

건물 개발업자 C는 밤사이에 조용히 처리해 주면 따로 돈을 주겠다고 한다.

A는 망설이지만, 박쥐 수가 많지 않다고 스스로를 설득한다.

그는 밤에 몰래 서식지를 없애고, 기록에는 평범한 방역 작업을 한 것처럼 남긴다.

계약은 성사되고 B는 A를 승진시킨다.

잠깐은 모든 것이 원하는 대로 흘러가는 듯하다.

하지만 신입 기사 하나가 A가 작업했다고 기록된 현장에서 죽은 보호종 동물을 발견하고 의심을 품는다.

A는 다시 거짓말을 한다.

신입에게 입을 다물라고 타이르고, 처음 한 거짓말을 맞추기 위해 C가 맡긴 또 다른 은밀한 일까지 받아들인다.

한 번 덮은 일을 지키려 할수록 더 큰 잘못이 필요해진다.

결국 조사관이 사건을 들여다보기 시작한다.

A는 C의 이름을 대면 빠져나갈 수 있지만, 그러면 자신이 처음부터 거짓말을 했다는 사실도 드러나고, 더러운 현장을 기어 다니며 쌓아 온 경력도 끝난다.

그는 끝까지 거짓말을 택한다.

자신을 지키려고 신입의 기록까지 망가뜨린다.

한때 A를 존경했던 그 신입은 결국 모든 사실을 신고한다.

A를 무너뜨린 것은 조사 그 자체가 아니라, 올라가려고 애쓰는 동안 그가 되어 버린 사람이다.

마지막 장면에서 A는 승진도 잃은 채 다시 좁은 건물 밑 공간에 홀로 들어가 있다.

손전등 불빛은 아무것도 없는 어둠만 비춘다.

The Last Colony

A pest control technician builds his reputation by clearing every infestation. One job exposes a protected colony. To save his rise, he buries the truth. The lie eats him from the inside.

Movement One.

A is the best technician at his company.

He takes the jobs others refuse.

He crawls through crawlspaces, sewers, dead walls.

He is proud.

People misjudge his trade, so he overdelivers.

He wants a manager title and the respect that comes with it.

B, the owner, dangles a promotion if A closes a contract on a stalled commercial property.

Movement Two.

A inspects the building.

He finds the pest is a protected bat species roosting in the roof void.

Law requires he stop, report it, and trigger a costly relocation.

That kills the contract and the promotion.

C, the property developer, offers A cash to handle it quietly overnight.

A hesitates.

He tells himself the colony is small.

He clears it after dark and logs a routine treatment.

The contract closes.

B promotes him.

A small rise.

Then a junior tech finds a dead protected animal in A's logged site and asks questions.

A covers it.

He coaches the junior to stay quiet.

He takes a second quiet job from C to keep the story consistent.

Each cover demands a worse one.

Movement Three.

An inspector opens a case.

A can clear himself by naming C, but that exposes his own first lie and ends his career he built crawling through filth.

He chooses the lie.

He destroys the junior's record to protect himself.

The junior, who once admired him, reports everything.

A falls, not from the inspection, but from the man he became to climb.

The final image.

A back in a crawlspace, alone, the promotion gone, holding a flashlight on nothing.
