한 로비스트가 공장 때문에 병든 피해자 가족들에게 보상금을 줄 법안을 직접 만든다. 하지만 법안을 통과시키려면 정작 그들을 살릴 조항을 빼야 한다. 그는 법안을 통과시키지만, 끝내 자신이 맞서 싸우던 쪽의 사람이 된다.

A는 독성 물질을 내뿜은 공장 때문에 병든 가족들을 위해 로비한다.

이 바닥에서는 드물게 양심을 지키려는 사람이고, 정치도 깨끗하게 할 수 있다고 믿는다.

그는 법안 초안을 직접 쓴다.

C는 A를 믿었다.

The Clause

A lobbyist writes the bill that will pay the families a factory poisoned. To pass it, he must cut the one line that pays them. He wins the bill and becomes the thing he fought.

A lobbies for a coalition of poisoned families.

He is the rare ethical one.

He believes the work can be clean.

He drafts the bill himself.

One clause matters: retroactive liability, the part that pays the people already sick.

C trusted him.

He promised her son would be covered.

B is the swing vote.

B makes the offer plainly.

Cut the retroactive clause and the votes appear.

B adds a second gift: a standing job at A's firm, secured.

A tells himself the bill is better passed than perfect.

He cuts the clause.

The bill passes.

The press names him the hero.

Then the corner closes.

The firm's new retainer is the factory's parent company.

The job B promised binds A to defend the people he just disarmed.

A moved everyone like pieces and finds he was placed.

C's claim is denied under the law he wrote.

Her eviction notice sits on his desk, unforwarded.

A keeps the clipping that calls him a hero.

He stops returning C's calls.

The ongoing pressure: every new win now requires another cut, and A is fluent in cutting.
