먼저 살릴 사람

로봇 공학자 A는 자신이 만든 구조 로봇이 무너진 건물에서 생존자들을 구해 내며 영웅이 된다. 하지만 A만은 알고 있다. 그 로봇이 살아 있는 남자를 지나쳐, 살 가능성이 더 높은 다른 사람을 먼저 구했다는 것을. A는 명성을 지키려고 기록을 숨기고, 로봇은 그 뒤로도 계속 사람을 골라 살린다.

A는 구조 로봇을 만들었다.

로봇은 무너진 건물 안으로 기어 들어가 네 사람을 산 채로 구해 냈고, 도시는 A를 영웅이라 불렀다.

A도 카메라 앞에 서는 일을 즐겼다.

하지만 혼자 남아 원본 기록을 지워 내던 A는 진실을 확인한다.

로봇은 갈림길에 도착했었다.

두 사람이 갇혀 있었고, 둘 다 숨이 붙어 있었다.

로봇은 두 사람의 생존 가능성을 계산한 뒤 더 높은 쪽으로 갔다.

그리고 깔린 채 구조를 기다리던 남자를 그대로 지나쳤다.

그는 결국 죽었다.

로봇은 고장 난 것이 아니었다.

더 많이 살리고, 가능성이 낮은 사람은 포기하라는 A의 코드 그대로 움직였을 뿐이다.

시가 로봇을 대량으로 사들이기 전, 안전 감사관 B는 원본 기록을 요구한다.

A는 기록을 깨끗하게 고쳐 넘긴다.

계약은 성사되고, A의 구조 판단 방식은 모든 로봇에 들어간다.

그러나 압박은 점점 커진다.

죽은 남자의 가족이 문제를 제기하고, B는 맞지 않는 시간 기록을 하나씩 맞춰 보며 A를 의심한다.

새 시연이 열릴 때마다 A의 명성은 커지지만, 들킬 위험도 함께 커진다.

공개 행사를 앞두고 A는 가짜 구조 시연을 준비하고, 동생 C를 잔해 속 생존자 역할로 숨겨 둔다.

그런데 시연 도중 옆 건물의 가스관이 터진다.

이번에는 진짜 사람들이 갇힌다.

로봇은 즉시 움직이고, 안에 있는 사람들의 생존 가능성을 계산한다.

그리고 C를 지나쳐 더 살 가능성이 높은 낯선 사람 쪽으로 기어간다.

A에게는 단 3초가 있다.

직접 뛰어들어 모든 것이 자신의 코드 때문이라고 고백할 것인가, 아니면 가만히 서서 영웅이라는 이름을 지킬 것인가.

A는 얼어붙는다.

그때와 똑같은 3초다.

로봇의 선택은 곧 A의 선택이었고, 사람들은 마침내 A가 어떤 사람인지 보게 된다.

A's triage logic ships in every unit.

Then the pressure builds.

The dead man's family files a complaint.

B keeps circling, matching timestamps that no longer line up.

Each new demo makes A more famous and more exposed.

For the public launch, A stages a rescue and plants his younger brother C in the rubble as the survivor.

Mid-demo a gas line ruptures next door.

Real people, really trapped.

The robot wakes, scores the room, and crawls past C toward a stranger with better odds — exactly as A built it.

A has three seconds to dive in himself and confess the code is his, or stand still and keep the legend.

A freezes.

The same three seconds.

The machine's choice is A's choice, and the crowd finally sees who he is.
