코드에 박아 넣은 거짓말

A는 회사를 살릴 시연을 앞두고 고장 난 기능을 멀쩡한 것처럼 꾸며 넘긴 개발자다. 거짓말은 통했다. 하지만 이제 그가 쓰는 코드 한 줄 한 줄은 그 거짓말을 지키기 위한 것이 되고, 제품을 믿은 사람들은 하나둘 피해를 입기 시작한다.

A는 작은 팀을 이끌며 진단 앱을 만든다.

남들이 못 푸는 문제를 자신만이 풀 수 있다고 믿고, 실제로도 팀은 그에게 많이 기대고 있다.

그런데 투자 여부가 걸린 시연을 하루 앞둔 밤까지도 핵심 기능은 제대로 돌아가지 않는다.

A는 결국 결과가 맞는 것처럼 보이도록 값을 코드에 미리 박아 넣고, 시연은 흠잡을 데 없이 끝난다.

투자자들은 믿고 돈을 댄다.

문제는 실제 사용자가 들어오면서 시작된다.

거짓으로 가려 둔 부분이 조금씩 드러나기 시작한 것이다.

품질 담당자 B는 이상한 결과가 특정 코드 경로에서 나온다는 사실을 찾아내고 이를 보고한다.

A는 이때 털어놓을 수 있었다.

하지만 그는 B가 잘못된 테스트를 한 것처럼 몰아가고, B를 그 부분에서 떼어 낸 뒤 들키지 않도록 코드를 조용히 손본다.

시간을 벌면 진짜로 고칠 수 있다고 믿는다.

거의 다 왔다고, 누군가 다치기 전에 끝낼 수 있다고 생각한다.

바로 그 믿음이 덫이 된다.

한 사용자가 잘못된 진단 결과를 믿고 행동했다가 다친다.

같은 선택이 더 큰 모습으로 다시 A 앞에 놓인다.

제품을 멈출 것인가, 아니면 수천 명에게 배포될 업데이트를 밀어붙일 것인가.

A의 자존심은 이미 답을 정해 놓았다.

그는 망가뜨린 사람이 아니라 끝내 고쳐 낸 사람이 되고 싶다.

그래서 배포한다.

그리고 숨겨 둔 거짓은 모두가 볼 수 있는 코드 속에서 한 줄씩 무너져 내린다.

추락은 우연이 아니다.

전부 A가 만든 일이다.

Hardcoded

A is the lead developer who fakes a broken feature to save a make-or-break demo. The lie works. Now every line he writes must protect it, and the people trusting the product are starting to get hurt.

A could confess here.

Instead he reframes B's finding as a broken test, moves B off the module, and quietly patches the seam to buy time.

He gets close to a real fix — close enough to believe he can land it before anyone is harmed.

That belief is the trap.

A user acts on a false reading and is hurt.

The same choice returns, larger: pull the product, or ship the update that scales it to thousands.

His pride decides for him — the need to be the one who fixes it, never the one who broke it.

He ships.

The seam tears in public, line by line, in code other people can finally read.

The fall is not an accident.

It is him.
