제대 아래

가난한 본당의 신부가 임종을 앞둔 신자의 고해에서, '가출했다'던 소녀가 실제로 어디에 묻혀 있는지를 듣는다. 시신이 묻힌 곳은 성당이 새로 올린 부속 건물 아래, 그 건물을 지을 돈을 댄 사람이 바로 소녀를 죽인 자다. 고해성사의 봉인은 그가 입을 여는 것을 허락하지 않는다. 자신을 사제이게 하는 단 하나의 서약을 깨지 않은 채, 그는 진실을 세상에 끄집어내야 한다.

A는 작고 형편이 어려운 본당을 맡고 있다.

박봉에 시달리고 승진에서도 오래도록 밀려났지만, 그는 자신을 외면해 온 교회 조직에 여전히 충실하다.

어느 날 임종을 앞둔 신자 B가 종부성사를 청하며 그를 부르더니 고해한다.

온 마을이 가출한 줄로만 알고 가슴 아파했던 그 소녀가 사실은 마을을 떠난 적이 없다는 것이다.

본당에 가장 큰 헌금을 바치는 후원자 C가 그녀를 죽여 새로 올린 부속 건물 기초 아래에 묻었고, B 자신은 그 콘크리트 붓는 일을 거들었다고 한다.

그러고는 B가 숨을 거두면서, 비밀은 고스란히 A의 안에 봉인된다.

고해의 비밀은 절대적이다.

B의 말을 입 밖에 내는 순간 A는 사제직을 박탈당하고, 자기 소명의 한복판에 놓인 서약을 배신하는 셈이 된다.

C는 본당의 살림을 떠받치는 사람이고, 주교 D는 그 헌금도 그 침묵도 함께 원한다.

A는 그저 죽어가는 사람의 헛소리였을 뿐이라고 스스로를 다독여 본다.

그러나 그는 소녀의 무덤 위에 세워진 제대에서 미사를 드리고, 영성체 때마다 C의 손을 맞잡는다.

도저히 그 자리에 그대로 머물 수가 없다.

그래서 A는 다시 시작한다.

고해 내용을 발설하는 방식이 아니라, 전혀 다른 문들을 두드려 같은 진실에 다가가는 방식으로.

빛바랜 실종 신고 기록, 공사 일지, 그리고 끝내 오지 않을 편지를 아직도 기다리고 있는 피해자의 언니 E.

그 과정에서 그는 자신이 지킬 수 있는 계율과 반드시 깨야 하는 계율을 가려내게 된다.

반전은 이렇다.

주교 D는 처음부터 알고 있었다.

헌금을 지키려고 애초의 침묵을 권한 사람이 바로 그였다.

A가 충성을 바쳐 온 교회 조직이야말로, 더 냉혹하게 진실을 감춰 온 또 다른 세계였던 것이다.

C는 A가 파고드는 낌새를 알아채고 그를 무너뜨리려 든다.

뒤에서 험담을 퍼뜨리고, E에게까지 위협의 손길을 뻗친다.

A는 직무가 정지되고 사제직마저 위태로워지는데, 유일한 증거는 하필 그가 결코 입에 담지 않겠다 맹세한 고해와 얽혀 있다.

결국 그는 단 하나의 깨끗한 길을 찾아낸다.

고해소 바깥에서 온전히 그러모은 증거, B의 말을 단 한마디도 빌리지 않고도 그 기초를 파헤치게 만들 만큼의 증거다.

그는 그것을 세상에 내놓고, 자신의 지위를 잃으면서, 끝내 제대 아래의 땅이 파헤쳐지도록 만든다.

소녀의 시신이 수습되고, C는 법 앞에 선다.

A는 서약의 문구를 글자 그대로 지켜냈지만, 그 서약을 악용해 쌓아 올린 모든 것을 잃는다.

본당을 잃은 사제가 된 그의 믿음은, 이제 조직이 아니라 살아 있는 이들과 땅에 묻힌 그 아이에게 매여 있다.

Under the Altar

A parish priest hears a dying man confess where a 'runaway' girl is really buried. The grave lies under the church's new wing, paid for by her killer. The seal of confession forbids him to speak. He must surface the truth without breaking the one vow that defines him.

A serves a small, struggling parish.

He is underpaid, long passed over, loyal to the institution that overlooked him.

A dying parishioner, B, calls him for last rites and confesses: the girl the town mourned as a runaway never left.

C, the parish's largest donor, killed her and buried her under the new wing's foundation.

B helped pour the concrete.

Then B dies, and the secret is sealed inside A.

The seal of confession is absolute.

To repeat B's words is to be defrocked, to betray the vow at the center of his calling.

C funds the parish.

The bishop, D, wants the gift and the silence.

A tells himself it was the raving of a dying man.

But he says Mass at the altar built over her grave.

He takes C's hand at communion.

He cannot stay there.

So A begins again, not by repeating the confession, but by chasing the same truth through other doors: old missing-person files, the construction logs, E, the victim's sister, still waiting for a letter that will never come.

He learns the rule he can keep and the one he must break.

Reversal: D already knew.

The bishop counseled the first silence to protect the donation.

The institution A served is the harsher, hidden world.

C senses A digging and moves to ruin him, with a whisper campaign and a threat aimed at E.

A is suspended, his collar at risk, the only proof tangled with a confession he swore never to reveal.

He finds the single clean path: evidence gathered wholly outside the confessional, enough to open the foundation without ever quoting B.

He brings it forward, loses his standing, and forces the ground beneath the altar to be broken.

The girl is recovered.

C faces the law.

A keeps the letter of his vow and loses everything built on its abuse, a priest with no parish, his faith now bound to the living and the buried instead of the institution.
