늘 도망자를 산 채로 데려오던 현상금 추적자가 오랜 거래처인 보석 보증업자에게서 급한 의뢰를 받는다. 그런데 영장은 봉인돼 있고 법원 출석일도 없다. 표적은 그가 예전에 넘겼지만 감방까지 가지 못한 남자의 여동생이다. 그녀를 살리려면, 그는 자기 밥줄이었던 세계를 무너뜨려야 한다.

A는 고액 보석금을 내고 풀려난 뒤 달아난 사람들을 찾아 데려오는 일을 한다.

말끔한 차림, 흠잡을 데 없는 실적, 오래 함께한 보석 보증업자 C.

A는 늘 표적을 살아 있는 채로 넘기고 돈을 받았다.

어느 날 C가 급한 의뢰를 건넨다.

대상은 B.

보석금 액수는 이례적으로 크고, 오늘 밤 안에 데려오면 보수는 두 배다.

A는 평소처럼 영장을 확인하다가 이상한 점을 본다.

영장은 봉인돼 있고, 법원 출석일도 적혀 있지 않다.

출석일이 없는 도망자는 법을 피해 달아나는 사람이 아니다.

A가 먼저 B를 찾아내지만, B는 도망치지 않는다.

오히려 A에게 달려든다.

B의 오빠는 2년 전 A가 C에게 넘긴 사람이었다.

그런데 그는 감방에 들어간 적이 없다.

B는 그동안 C가 숨겨 온 보석 기록을 뒤쫓고 있었다.

이름이 올라왔다가 지워지고, 사람들은 사라졌다.

A가 직접 데려간 B의 오빠도 그중 하나였다.

이제 C는 B도 같은 방식으로 없애려 한다.

A는 그제야 깨닫는다.

자신이 깨끗한 기록이라고 믿어 온 것들은 확인하지 않은 죽음과 실종 위에 세워진 것이었다.

B를 넘기면 그녀도 사라진다.

A는 B와 함께 잠적한다.

그러자 같은 의뢰서가 A가 아는 모든 추적자에게 뿌려진다.

업계는 A를 배신자로 몰고, 두 사람을 사냥하기 시작한다.

A bounty hunter who always brings his skips back alive takes a rush job from his oldest bondsman. The warrant is sealed and carries no court date. C hands A a rush file: a skip, B, on a record bail.

A pulls the warrant out of habit.

It is sealed.

No court date.

A skip with no court date is not running from the law.

A finds B first.

B does not run.

She comes at him.

Her brother was a skip A delivered to C two years back.

He never reached a cell.

B has been tracing C's sealed bonds: names posted, then erased.

A carried her brother in.

Now C wants B the same way.

A's whole clean record is bodies he never counted.

He understands the math at once: if he delivers B, B disappears.

He goes dark with her instead.

The same file goes out to every hunter A knows.

The network flags him as rogue and starts hunting them both.

His license, his contacts, his name all belong to C's world, and none of them work now.

To keep B alive, the hunter who always delivers has to die.

A stops running and turns the chase around.

He brings B not to C, not to the cops C pays, but to the one room C cannot reach: a federal contact, B's evidence in hand, deadline closing, C's men at the door.

A hands over a witness instead of a body.

C's bond empire cracks open.

The disappeared get names.

The network blackballs A.

He walks away with no fee and no license.

He keeps B breathing, and the count of every man he never followed up on.
