단골

커피집 직원 A는 단골들이 무엇을 마시는지 다 외우고 있다. 그러던 어느 날 한 단골이 사라지고, 그가 남긴 마지막 주문이 암호였다는 사실이 드러난다. A는 그 암호를 풀다가 생각보다 훨씬 위험한 일에 휘말린다.

A는 카페에서 아침 근무를 한다.

단골들이 무엇을 주문하는지 모르는 사람이 없다.

그중 B는 날마다 같은 코르타도를 시킨다.

B는 접은 지폐로 계산하고, 컵 홀더에는 늘 이상한 요청 하나를 적어 둔다.

그러던 어느 아침, B가 오지 않는다.

B가 마지막으로 남긴 컵 홀더에는 따로 보면 아무 뜻도 없는 문장이 적혀 있다.

A는 그 문장을 지난 몇 주 동안의 이상한 주문들과 맞춰 본다.

그리고 B가 주문 내용 속에 몰래 말을 숨겨 왔다는 걸 알아낸다.

바리스타를 눈여겨보는 사람은 없다.

이 카페가 B에게는 몰래 연락할 수 있는 유일한 길이었다.

A는 그냥 모른 척하고 싶다.

월세는 밀려 있고, 일자리는 안정적이며, B는 그저 손님일 뿐이다.

하지만 흩어진 메모들을 이어 붙이자 날짜 하나가 나온다.

바로 내일이다.

그때 사장이 A에게 여분 열쇠를 건네며 오늘은 일찍 문을 닫으라고 한다.

그 말은 사장도 이미 알고 있었다는 뜻이나 다름없다.

A는 다시 그 연락을 이어 보기로 한다.

일부러 이상한 주문을 만들어 B가 두려워한 사람을 끌어내려 한다.

그리고 매일 오던 또 다른 단골 C가 바로 그 사람이라는 사실을 알게 된다.

A가 가장 안전하다고 믿었던 계산대 안쪽은 덫이 된다.

C는 계산대를 사이에 두고 A를 압박한다.

A는 B가 남긴 컵들을 지킬지, 자기 몸부터 피할지 선택해야 한다.

A는 컵들을 버리지 않는다.

B가 가리킨 그날, A는 손님을 맞고 주문을 내는 익숙한 흐름을 거꾸로 이용한다.

이름을 부르고, 줄을 세우고, 몰려드는 손님들의 움직임을 짜 맞춘다.

그리고 단 한마디의 고발도 없이, 사람들로 가득 찬 카페 한가운데서 C의 정체를 드러낸다.

B의 경고는 마침내 모두에게 닿는다.

위험은 공개된 자리에서 이름을 얻는다.

A는 카페를 지켜 내지만, 계산대 앞에 선 A는 더는 예전의 A가 아니다.

A를 보이지 않는 사람처럼 만들었던 그 일이, 오히려 A만이 진실을 보게 만든 일이었기 때문이다.

The Regular

The job is steady.

But the assembled notes name a date, and the date is tomorrow.

The owner hands A a spare key and says to lock up early — which only proves the owner already knew.

A reopens the channel.

A invents orders to draw out the person B feared.

A learns that one daily regular, C, is that person.

The counter, the one place A felt safe, becomes the trap.

C confronts A across the register.

A must save B's cups or save herself.

A keeps the cups.

On B's date, A turns the ritual of service against C.

A calls the names, sets the line, choreographs the rush, and exposes C in front of the full room without a single spoken accusation.

B's warning finally lands.

The danger is named in public.

A keeps the shop, but stands at the counter changed: the job that made A invisible made A the only one who could see.
