가난한 책 복원가가 오래된 해운업 집안의 물에 젖은 장부를 고치다가, 책등 속에 감춰진 낱장들을 찾아낸다. 그 안에는 그 집안이 돈으로 덮어 버린 한 사람의 죽음이 적혀 있다. 상속자는 그 종이를 없애 주면 1년 치 월세를 주겠다고 한다. 믿음으로 버티는 일을 지키려면, 그녀는 그동안 자신을 숨겨 주던 무명 생활을 내려놓아야 한다.

A는 빌린 제본 작업실에서 혼자 오래된 문서와 책을 고친다.

이 일은 티가 나지 않아야 잘한 일로 여겨진다.

손댄 흔적이 보이지 않을수록 좋다.

하지만 월세는 밀려 있고, 작업실을 계속 지킬 수 있을지도 알 수 없다.

그때 오래된 해운업 집안의 상속자 B가 찾아온다.

그는 곧 열릴 공개 추모 행사에 내놓을 할아버지의 장부가 홍수로 망가졌다며 복원을 맡긴다.

A는 표지 안쪽을 조심스럽게 불려 떼어 내다가 책등 속에 접어 넣어 꿰맨 종이들을 발견한다.

그 종이에는 할아버지가 직접 쓴 기록이 남아 있다.

집안의 잘못으로 부두 노동자 한 사람이 불에 타 죽었고, 그 사실을 돈으로 입막음했다는 내용이다.

B는 A가 그 글을 읽었다는 것을 알아차린다.

그는 책을 온전하게 만들어 달라고 말하지만, 그 말은 숨겨진 종이를 빼고 깨끗한 장부만 내놓으라는 뜻이다.

대가로 1년 치가 넘는 월세를 먼저 내민다.

A는 흔들린다.

복원가는 판단하지 않고 물건만 고치는 사람이라고 스스로를 달래 보기도 한다.

돈도 절실하다.

그러나 스승에게서 배운 말이 떠오른다.

복원가는 물건을 고치는 사람이지, 그 안에 담긴 이야기를 지우는 사람이 아니다.

A는 일을 계속 맡되, 숨겨진 종이들을 다시 넣기 전에 여러 파장의 빛으로 촬영해 기록을 남긴다.

B는 한발 앞서 움직인다.

그의 금고에 있던 원본 장부가 다시 망가졌다는 말이 나오고, 숨겨진 종이들은 사라진다.

A는 수리비를 올리려고 책에 손댄 사람으로 몰린다.

복원가에게 가장 중요한 이름값이 더럽혀진다.

하지만 A에게는 촬영해 둔 기록이 남아 있다.

그리고 죽은 부두 노동자의 손녀 C도 찾아낸다.

추모 행사 당일, B는 A에게 깨끗한 장부가 진짜라고 확인해 주면 누명을 벗겨 주고 작업실도 지원하겠다고 제안한다.

A는 그 제안을 거절한다.

대신 장부 옆에 촬영본을 펼쳐 놓고, 묻혀 있던 이름을 사람들 앞에서 읽는다.

A는 의뢰인도, 돈도, 조용히 숨어 살던 자리도 잃는다.

C는 문서로 남은 진실과 권리를 얻는다.

아무도 보지 못하게 하는 것이 일이었던 A의 기술은, 이제 누구도 못 본 척할 수 없는 증거가 된다.

A broke book conservator restores an old family's flood-damaged ledger and finds pages hidden in the spine that name a death the family paid to bury. The heir offers a year's rent to erase them. To stay true to a craft that survives on trust, she has to spend the anonymity that has kept her safe.

A restores everyday documents alone in a rented bindery.

The work is invisible by design; done right, no one sees it.

Rent is overdue.

B, heir to an old shipping family, commissions A to restore his grandfather's flood-damaged ledger for a public memorial.

While humidifying the boards, A lifts the pastedown and finds folded leaves sewn into the spine, a private account in the grandfather's hand.

It names a dock worker who died in a fire the family caused, and the silence they bought.

B sees that A has read it.

He asks her to 'make the book whole,' meaning remove those leaves and present a clean volume.

He pays more than a year of rent up front.

A almost agrees; the work is supposed to be neutral, and she needs the money.

But an old teaching holds: a conservator repairs the object, not the story.

A takes the job and quietly images the hidden leaves under multispectral light before returning them.

B moves first.

The original ledger 'is damaged again' in his vault, the hidden leaves gone, and A is accused of tampering to inflate her fee.

Her name, the only thing a conservator trades on, is poisoned.

But A still holds the spectral scans, and she has traced C, granddaughter of the dead worker.

At the memorial unveiling B offers to clear her name and fund her shop if she confirms the clean book is authentic.

A instead lays the scanned account beside the volume and reads the buried name aloud.

She loses the client, the fee, and her quiet anonymity.

C gains a documented truth and a claim.

A's invisible craft becomes the one thing that cannot be unseen.
